Understanding correct ball position and stance is essential for optimising your golf shots. The position of the ball and width of your stance vary depending on the club you’re using to ensure the best angle of attack, power and shot control.

Here, Hinckley Golf Club PGA Professional, Amy Taylor, explains how you should set up with driver, irons and wedges for optimal performance.

  • Driver: Play the ball further forward in your stance, level with your left heel. Use a wide stance and focus on hitting up on the ball to optimise launch and distance.
  • 7 Iron: Position the ball centrally with a slightly narrower stance. Keeping the ball in the middle promotes a downward, more consistent strike.
  • Wedge: Use a narrow stance and place the ball centrally or slightly behind centre to encourage a downward strike for better control and spin.

Adjusting your stance and ball position accordingly will help maximise accuracy and performance with each club.
