We can’t all be a Rory McIlroy, a Jon Rahm or a Scottie Scheffler off the tee, but we still strive to drive it better, longer and straighter.

That’s easier than done, of course. The driver can be a hard club to hit. It’s got the longest shaft, it’s got the least loft and as a result, it can be difficult to control.

In this video, PGA professional Steve Johnston, looks at how the body works, especially the left foot (if a right hander). Taking inspiration from a number of successful tour players, Steve suggests getting the weight from the left foot to go round the outside of the foot and deep into the heel before impact.  “Very rarely do you see a flat left foot on impact,” says Steve.

By focusing on footwork, instead of the parameters of the swing, you will encourage the body to open up and you will reap the rewards from the tee.
