It’s a common ailment for many golfers. You get in and around the green and your short game lets you down with duffed chips here, thins there or fluffs everywhere.
In this wide-ranging tutorial, PGA Professional Chris Ryan looks at all manner of ways to improve your chipping.
Taking into account the varying territory you may be chipping from, Chris suggests thinking creatively and not using the same club for every chip. You’ve got clubs in the bag so don’t be afraid to use the different weapons in the armoury, whether it’s a wedge, an 8-iron or even a 6-iron.
Chris also focusses on set up while encouraging a little bit of wrist work in the chip which aids the flow of the club. As he says, “let the wrists work, don’t lock them in place.” Controlling the movement of the clubhead, meanwhile, promotes a better angle of attack.
As for combatting those old golfing demons that lurk in the head? Well, with your mind saying the club shouldn’t hit the ground and your technique telling you it should, there can be significant and ultimately damaging conflict. Chris has found a truce, though. Watch this video and you’ll not be left feeling blue around the greens.
