PGA Advanced Professional Steve Johnston explains how exaggerating swing positions and using gravity can improve golf technique and achieve a controlled draw or straight ball flight.

Golf, as the great Arnold Palmer suggested, “is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated.” Thank goodness, then, for an easy golf lesson.

Getting too steep on the downswing is a common problem and the over-the-top, out-to-in action tends to lead to a slice. In this tutorial, Steve emphasises the importance of gravity.

Ideally, you would want the club to fall behind you at the start of the downswing so that the left wrist is bowed slightly. You then turn the body as gravity does it job with the result being that the club is slightly behind the hands which is perfect for a preferred in-to-out path.
